No one wants to be told they need a root canal. We like to prevent situations where a root canal is needed, but sometimes root canal treatment is necessary to cure or prevent infection or pain. Sometimes a cavity can reach all the way to the pulp and nerve. Previously deep restorations or trauma can cause the nerve to be damaged to the point that it needs root canal therapy. If left untreated, an infected tooth can cause an abscess that can eat away at the surrounding bone or spread to other areas of the body. This can weaken the entire immune system and can be potentially dangerous. Symptoms of an infected nerve may include spontaneous pain, sensitivity to hot/cold, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, pus, or a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no symptoms are apparent and you may be unaware of a problem until a checkup.
A root canal is performed to clean out the infected tooth nerve, and disinfect the canals of the tooth. Once the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any further infection. Usually a build-up and crown is recommended for restoring a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
