Sedation and Relaxation Dentistry

Do you hate the dentist? Do you get anxious when you visit the dentist? We know that a lot of patients have had bad dental experiences in the past, and we strive to provide treatment that is easy and comfortable for you. We want to make you as comfortable as possible! We have several options for making your experience more enjoyable.

-Laughing Gas
Laughing gas is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide that is safely administered through a mask. Laughing gas is highly effective in making you feel more relaxed and gives feelings of euphoria and giddiness. It is especially helpful in fearful children, heavy gaggers, patients with TMJ discomfort upon opening for periods of time, and those that need extended work. Laughing gas is a highly trusted method of sedation that is generally appropriate for most people. Usually, this is all you need to overcome your fear of the dentist! An oxygen flush is given after the procedure so that the laughing gas leaves your system, and you may safely drive home.

-IV sedation
Also known as general anesthesia, IV sedation is administered through an IV that is placed in your arm. During the entire dental procedure, your vital signs are monitored, including oxygen levels, heart rate, and pulse by a dentist that is extensively trained in sedation.

Typically, IV sedation dentistry is used for complex restorative work or dental surgery (such as tooth extractions).
With this type of sedation dentistry, you will need someone to pick you up from the dental office and stay with you for 2-4 hours as the sedative effects of the drug wear off.
IV sedation dentistry is typically used for patients who:
– Are severely afraid of the dentist
– Have an overactive gag reflex
– Have a physical disability that makes receiving dental treatment difficulty
– Have trouble getting completely numb
– Need oral surgery (such as root canals, gum disease treatment, or extractions)
– Have no tolerance for discomfort or pain

-Oral Sedation
If even the thought of walking into a dental office makes you overly anxious, our dentist can prescribe you an oral sedative to be taken the night before and day of your procedure. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment when taking an oral sedative.
